Maybird Classic Sailing

All things mechanical

The restoration of a classic sailing yacht

It was always the plan to upgrade Maybird’s mechanical systems. Fortunately, Nick Morris (Antarctic Marine – Mechanical Engineering. Saxon Wharf, Southampton SO14 9QF. 07946 222447 02380 633456) runs his engineering business next to our shed. Nick was up to the challenge of maintaining Maybird’s classic lines and descreetly installing a lot of ‘mod-cons’ not available in the Lt Colonel’s day.

Nick had worked on many classics in the past and his experience as resident engineer for the British Antarctic Expedition provided a degree of ingenuity very necessary as we squeezed our ‘mod-cons’ into what is, by comparison to a modern production, a narrow hull.

Martin Kimish

Martin Kimish

From time to time, Nick called on Martin Kimish (Cambrian Land and Sea, the Haven, 38 Exeter road, Bitterne, Southampton, SO18 2EG 07887 745388 or 02380 462323), a veteran of many classic restorations – Valsheda et.al.

Both Nick and Martin proved very adept at getting quarts into pint pots – Fred Shepherd would have been proud of them.
