The restoration of a classic sailing yacht

“I thought we were restoring a classic sailing yacht not a bloody spyship”, uttered one of the team as the extensive range of marine electronic toys were unpacked.

Maybird’s electrical system was totally replaced together with her marine electronics. Our accomplices in this part of ship were Keith Ash (www.greenham-regis.com) and John Flynn together with Chris Willey (contactmarine@ntlworld.com) and Tristan Caldery. Traditionalists and prudent mariners will be relieved to know we have retained on board Maybird’s Walker log, Aldis lamp, fog horn and signalling flags all of which aided her passage to New Zealand in 1972. We also resurrected her original flag signal – GDZR – as her callsign despite Ofcom’s best efforts to give us a shiny new one.

As we started the second half of 2009, it was obvious that the restoration now had many more moving parts and we needed help pulling it all together. I met Diana Cottrell on the 2009 Fastnet campaign – we crewed the same boat and Diana stepped in to coordinate the project through to completion and also get the charter business underway. Diana is a commercially endorsed Yachtmaster who has successfully grown and developed her own business. Her love of classic yachts, great sense of humour and good communication skills have largely kept us out of trouble.
